First 7 Days: A Spiritual Starter Plan
A simple guide for your first week following Jesus. Take one day at a time as you begin walking with God.
Focus
Your new life with God begins with grace.
When you placed your faith in Jesus, God welcomed you into His family. You did not earn His love, and you do not have to prove yourself to Him. He loves you, forgives you, and invites you to begin walking with Him.
Bible Reading
Read John 1:1–14.
As you read, notice how Jesus is described as the light who came into the world.
Simple Prayer
God, thank You for loving me and welcoming me. Thank You for sending Jesus for me. Help me begin this new journey with You. Teach me to know You, trust You, and follow You. Amen.
Today’s Step
Take a few quiet minutes and simply thank God for anything that comes to mind.
Focus
Prayer is simply talking with God.
You do not need fancy words. You do not need to sound religious. God wants honesty. You can talk to Him about your questions, your fears, your hopes, your struggles, and your gratitude.
Prayer is not a performance. It is relationship.
Bible Reading
Read Matthew 6:9–13.
This passage is often called "The Lord’s Prayer." Jesus gave it as a simple pattern for prayer.
Simple Prayer
God, help me learn how to pray. Help me speak honestly with You. Thank You that I do not have to pretend with You. Lead me today and help me listen for Your voice. Amen.
Today’s Step
Pray for two or three minutes. You can begin with: "God, today I want to talk to You about..."
Focus
The Bible helps us know God.
The Bible is not just a religious book. It is the story of God’s love, humanity’s need, Jesus’ rescue, and God’s plan to make all things new. Through Scripture, we learn who God is, who we are, and how to live.
You do not need to understand everything right away. Start small and keep going.
Bible Reading
Read John 3:1–17.
Pay special attention to John 3:16 and what it says about God’s love.
Simple Prayer
God, help me understand Your Word. Show me who You are. Help me see Jesus more clearly. Give me an open heart and teach me how to follow You. Amen.
Today’s Step
After reading, ask yourself: What does this passage show me about God?
Focus
Faith grows best in community.
Following Jesus is personal, but it was never meant to be private or isolated. One of the best early steps you can take is to tell someone you trust that you have decided to follow Jesus.
This could be a pastor, a Christian friend, a family member, or someone at church who can encourage you.
At Gateway Church we have a saying around here: "Life is better together!"
Bible Reading
Read Romans 10:9–13.
This passage reminds us that faith involves both the heart and the life we now live openly before God.
Simple Prayer
God, give me courage to share what You are doing in my life. Lead me to someone who can encourage me and help me grow. Thank You that I do not have to walk this journey alone. Amen.
Today’s Step
Tell one person: "I’ve decided to start following Jesus, and I’m trying to learn what that means."
Focus
Following Jesus does not mean you will never struggle again.
You may still face temptation, old habits, doubts, fear, guilt, or confusion. That does not mean you have failed. It means you are growing.
When you struggle, do not run away from God. Run to Him. God is patient, loving, and ready to help you.
Bible Reading
Read 1 John 1:5–9.
Notice God’s invitation to walk in the light and receive His forgiveness.
Simple Prayer
God, I need Your help. I confess that I cannot change myself by my own strength. Please forgive me, guide me, and help me walk in a new way. Give me strength to follow You today. Amen.
Today’s Step
Name one area of your life where you need God’s help. Pray honestly about it.
Focus
Church is a spiritual family.
Church is not a place for perfect people. It is a community of people learning to follow Jesus together. In church, we worship, pray, learn from Scripture, serve one another, and grow in faith.
You do not need to know everything before you come. You can come as you are.
Bible Reading
Read Acts 2:42–47.
This passage gives a picture of the early Christian community worshipping, learning, praying, and sharing life together.
Simple Prayer
God, help me find my place in Your family. Give me courage to connect with others. Help me grow through worship, Scripture, prayer, and community. Amen.
Today’s Step
Make a plan to attend a Sunday service, join a Life Group, or speak with someone at Gateway Church.
Focus
You do not need to figure out the whole journey today.
Following Jesus happens one step at a time. Your next step might be baptism, joining a Life Group, reading through the Gospel of John, meeting with a pastor, serving, or simply continuing to pray every day.
God will keep leading you as you keep walking with Him.
Bible Reading
Read Proverbs 3:5–6.
This passage reminds us to trust God and allow Him to direct our path.
Simple Prayer
God, thank You for walking with me this week. Please show me my next step. Help me trust You, follow You, and keep growing. I give You my life again today. Amen.
Today’s Step
Choose one next step:
- Attend church this Sunday.
- Tell a pastor about your decision.
- Ask about baptism.
- Join a Life Group.
- Start reading the Gospel of John.
- Pray every morning this week.
- Ask someone to help you grow in your faith.
The first week is only the beginning.
Keep praying. Keep reading Scripture. Keep coming to church. Keep asking questions. Keep walking with Jesus.
You may not understand everything yet, and that is okay. Faith grows over time. God is patient, loving, and faithful. He will continue to guide you as you take each next step.
At Gateway Church, we would be honoured to walk with you.
You do not have to figure out the whole journey today. Just take the next faithful step.
