Baptism
An outward sign of an inward grace. Baptism is a meaningful next step for those who have placed their faith in Jesus and desire to follow Him.
Baptism is one of the most meaningful next steps in the life of a follower of Jesus.
If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, baptism is a public way of saying, "I belong to Jesus. He has forgiven me, made me new, and I want to follow Him with my life."
At Gateway Church, we believe baptism is a sacred and joyful moment. It is not about having everything figured out. It is not about being perfect. It is about responding to God’s grace and publicly declaring your faith in Jesus.
Baptism is a visible sign of an invisible work of God.
It points to the new life Jesus gives us through His death and resurrection. It reminds us that we are forgiven, welcomed into God’s family, and called to walk in a new way.
If you have decided to follow Jesus, baptism may be your next faithful step.
Baptism is a sacrament of the church commanded by Jesus.
A sacrament is a sacred act through which God reminds us of His grace, strengthens our faith, and helps us respond to Him. Baptism does not save us by itself, but it is a powerful outward sign of the new life God has begun in us.
In baptism, we publicly declare that Jesus Christ is our Saviour and Lord.
Baptism points to several important truths:
- Jesus has died and risen again.
- Through faith in Jesus, we are forgiven and made new.
- We are welcomed into the family of God.
- We are called to live as followers of Jesus.
- We now belong to Christ and His Church.
Baptism is not the end of the journey. It is part of the beginning.
Jesus was baptized, and He also instructed His followers to baptize others as part of making disciples.
For followers of Jesus, baptism is an act of obedience, faith, and witness. It is a way of saying publicly what has already begun inwardly: "I have trusted Jesus, and I want to follow Him."
Baptism matters because it helps us:
- obey Jesus,
- publicly declare our faith,
- celebrate God’s grace,
- identify with the death and resurrection of Jesus,
- mark a new beginning,
- and take our place within the family of God.
Baptism is a beautiful way to say, "My life belongs to Jesus."
Baptism is not what saves us. Jesus saves us.
We are saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is not a religious work that earns forgiveness. It is a response to the grace God has already given.
The Wesleyan tradition teaches that baptism is not the door to salvation, but an outward sign of the new birth God has worked in the heart.
In other words, baptism does not replace faith in Jesus. Baptism expresses faith in Jesus.
It is a public sign that we have received His grace and are choosing to follow Him.
If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ and desire to follow Him, baptism is an important next step.
You do not need to be perfect to be baptized. You do not need to understand everything about the Christian life. But baptism should be taken seriously. It is a public declaration that you are trusting Jesus as Saviour and choosing to follow Him as Lord.
If you are unsure whether you are ready, we would be glad to talk with you, answer your questions, and help you discern your next step.
Baptisms at Gateway Church usually takes place during an outdoor service so the church family can celebrate with you and support you.
Before being baptized, you may be asked a few simple questions about your faith in Jesus. These questions help you publicly affirm that you believe in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, that Jesus died and rose again, and that you desire to follow Him.
Then you will be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The moment is simple, sacred, and joyful.
You do not need to be nervous. We will walk you through everything ahead of time.
In The Wesleyan Church, baptism may be done by immersion, pouring, or sprinkling.
Some people are immersed in water as a powerful picture of being buried and raised with Christ. Others are baptized by water being poured or sprinkled upon them. Each method uses water and is done in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The important meaning is not the amount of water used, but the grace of God being signified and the faith being declared.
If you have questions about the method of baptism, we would be glad to talk with you.
In The Wesleyan Church, parents may choose either infant baptism or child dedication.
Infant baptism is a sign of God’s prevenient grace, the grace of God that reaches toward us before we are even able to understand or respond. When parents present a child for baptism, they are testifying to their faith in God’s grace and promising to raise the child in the Christian faith.
Child dedication is also available for parents who prefer to wait until their child is old enough to personally profess faith in Jesus and be baptized as a believer.
At Gateway Church, we want to walk graciously with families as they discern what is best. Whether through baptism or dedication, the heart is the same: we desire to help children know the love of Jesus and grow in faith.
If you were baptized as an infant or young child and have now personally placed your faith in Jesus, we would love to talk with you.
In the Wesleyan tradition, someone baptized as an infant may publicly affirm the vows that were made on their behalf. This allows them to personally declare their faith in Jesus and their desire to follow Him.
Some people are unsure how to understand their earlier baptism. That is okay. We would be glad to help you process your story prayerfully and biblically.
The goal is not simply to repeat a ceremony. The goal is to faithfully respond to what God is doing in your life.
If you were baptized in another Christian church in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we would be glad to talk with you about your story.
In many cases, Christian baptism is recognized as valid and does not need to be repeated. However, if your baptism happened before you personally understood or embraced faith in Jesus, or if you are unsure what your next step should be, we can help you discern that with care.
The most important question is not simply, "Was I baptized before?" but, "Am I now personally trusting and following Jesus?"
Yes. In The Wesleyan Church, Christian baptism is one of the conditions of membership.
Membership is a deeper commitment to belong to a local church family, support its mission, and walk together in faith, accountability, and service. Baptism is one of the ways we publicly identify with Christ and His Church.
You do not need to become a member immediately after baptism, but baptism is an important step in the journey of discipleship and belonging.
That is completely normal.
Many people feel nervous before being baptized. You may wonder what to say, what people will think, what the moment will feel like, or whether you are "ready enough."
You are not alone. We will help you prepare, answer your questions, and walk with you through the process.
Baptism is not about performing in front of people. It is about celebrating what Jesus has done in your life.
You may be ready for baptism if:
- you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ,
- you have asked for God’s forgiveness,
- you desire to follow Jesus with your life,
- you understand baptism as a public declaration of faith,
- and you are willing to take this step in obedience to Christ.
You do not need to be perfect. You simply need to be sincere.
If you are still unsure, we would be honoured to talk and pray with you.
